Keeping It Fun While We Wait for Dirt Season to Begin
Remember that 15 inches of snow two weeks ago? It feels like it belonged to another season entirely. Then yesterday rolled in at 71 degrees like a bold little preview of spring. Windows down. Trails calling. Bikes practically rattling in the garage asking, “Is it time yet?”
If you got outside, well played. If you didn’t, don’t worry. The riding itch is officially back.
While we’re patiently waiting for the trails in Brown County State Park to dry out from the snow melt, there are still plenty of ways to spin the legs and feed the soul right here in Brown County.
1. Brown County Pump Track at Deer Run Park
The Brown County Pump Track at Deer Run Park is paved, which makes it a year-round playground for riders of all levels.
Snow melt? No problem. Mud season? Not here.
The pump track is the perfect place to keep your skills sharp and your flow smooth. Work on cornering, balance, and speed without ever touching a pedal. It’s equal parts workout and rollercoaster.
Bonus: it’s just plain fun. Like, ear-to-ear grin fun.
2. Gravel: Brown County’s Backroad Treasure Map
We’ve got beautiful gravel routes scattered all throughout the county. Stop by the shop and we’ll happily share a favorite loop. Or check out Kate Nolan Brown County Bikes on Strava for saved routes ready to roll.
Gravel season has a way of sneaking up on you. One sunny day and suddenly you’re plotting 30 miles and a coffee stop.
3. Road Riding: Scenic and Smart
Our country roads weave like ribbon through the hills. It’s classic Brown County beauty at its finest. Just a heads-up, many of our roads don’t have shoulders.
Bright, reflective colors are your best friend out there. A front and rear light adds another layer of visibility and safety, especially with rolling terrain and blind curves.
Ride predictably. Ride aware. Ride like someone is watching from a farmhouse porch cheering you on.
4. Trainer Season Isn’t Over Yet
Let’s be honest. Indoor riding isn’t quite the same as fresh air and birdsong. But smart trainers have changed the game. Structured workouts, sustained efforts, and zero traffic make it a powerful way to build fitness while the trails finish drying out.
We have one Saris H3 Smart Trainer left in stock at the shop. If you’ve been thinking about leveling up your training, this might be your sign. Stop in and try it out for yourself — or check it out online right here: https://www.browncountybikes.com/product/saris-h3-direct-drive-smart-trainer-366464-1.htm
Your spring legs will thank you.
Spring in Brown County is a little unpredictable. One week you’re shoveling snow. The next you’re reaching for sunscreen. But one thing’s for sure: riding season is right around the corner.
Until the dirt is ready, there’s still plenty of ways to keep the wheels turning.
See you out there!
